End of life care

Hummingbird House provides a caring embrace that allows families the time and space they need to say goodbye to their child. We work with families to understand how they would like to spend these last precious moments – be it in the backyard under the stars, watching the sunset or cuddling together as a family in bed. This may take place onsite at Hummingbird House Brisbane, in their home, or at another community location. We work with each family to understand their child’s preferred place of death.

A child’s end of life is unique to each family. Our specialist care team supports families to explore their options and decide what feels right for their child, and their family, while honouring their physical, emotional, cultural and spiritual needs. Our specialist paediatric clinical care team also ensures their child’s symptoms are managed during this time, keeping them as pain free and comfortable as possible. This is usually done in consultation with their child’s primary care team.

Hummingbird House offers families a number of additional supports such as memory making, after-death care, funeral and memorial planning, and grief and bereavement support. These services are extended to their family as their child approaches the end of life, and following their child’s death.

If you are caring for a child that you think maybe eligible to receive our care and support please contact our Family and Community Support Team on 07 3621 4364 or email [email protected].
