How to become a volunteer

Join the caring community at Hummingbird House! Find out how you can make a difference by becoming a volunteer at Queensland's only children's hospice, providing vital support to children and families in need.

To become a volunteer, please consider the following conditions:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ideally, you want to commit to a weekly shift which are available 7 days a week from 8:00am to 8:00pm.
  • Commitment a minimum of six months of active volunteering is required by Hummingbird House.
  • Provide evidence of vaccination or immunity for MMR, Hepatitis B, Whooping Cough, Varicella and COVID-19.
  • Obtain a Blue Card and a NDIS working screening check.
  • Interact effectively and positively with children, families, staff and volunteers.
  • Possess good communication skills.
  • Respect confidentiality and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Complete required assessments independently and follow health and safety guidelines.

Steps to become a volunteer

STEP 1

Register your interest

STEP 2

Interview 
You will attend a brief interview that gives us the opportunity to get to know you, have a quick conversation about the type of work you would like to do, and allow you to ask any questions you may have about volunteering at Hummingbird House. The interview may be either over the phone or face-to-face. We give a tour around the house to all volunteers before they start.

STEP 3

Requirements
You will be contacted by our Volunteering team to provide the information below:

  • Blue Card application
  • NDIS working screening check.
  • Vaccination Evidence Form
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Evidence
  • Once our team has received your documentation, you will be contacted to complete some mandatory online training.

STEP 4

Orientation
You will attend a face-to-face orientation run by our Volunteer Coordinator.

STEP 5

You are set
You just need to show up to your first shift!
