Over the past 10 years, the Coles appeal has raised more than $4.3 million for Queensland families loving and caring for a child with a life-limiting condition.
Last year alone, Queensland Coles customers donated almost $1 million to Hummingbird House, meaning more families could access specialised paediatric palliative care. This year, with your help, we know we can raise even more!
Below, we’d like to introduce you to this year’s Hummingbird House families, who have specially designed the $2 donation cards on sale at Coles in memory of their children. Their stories of both joy and grief highlight the important work of Hummingbird House.

Meet Mia (11 weeks).
Mia’s family found a haven in Hummingbird House, a place where her parents could focus on just being mum and dad, and her siblings could still find joy with their much-loved sister. With the unwavering support and specialised care of staff, Mia’s family had the space and time to cherish every precious moment of her short life.

Meet Sean (2 years).
In the best of times, Hummingbird House offered Sean and his family respite care, a place to celebrate and an extended community. In the family’s darkest moments, staff have been a safety net, catching them when they needed it most. The opportunity to find moments of joy and create precious memories when time is short is at the heart of Hummingbird House.

Meet Thomas (7 years).
Thomas’s family cherish the days they spent with him at Hummingbird House, before brain cancer cruelly took his life. During Thomas’s final days, his mum was able to share tender moments in a supportive environment tailored to their needs, with the comfort that Thomas’s twin brother was also being cared for by staff at this heartbreaking time.

Maddy’s infectious smile could be seen as she splashed in the pool, helped in the kitchen, and in the endless cuddles from the family she loved most. The care Maddy’s family received to make the most of their time together continued past her death, through grief and bereavement support from Hummingbird House staff who knew Maddy and her family so well.
